Hydropower dams are controversial for their impact on ecosystems and the potential for methane emissions from their reservoirs. Despite these downsides, hydroelectric dams hold 97% of the world’s stored electricity and have a lower carbon footprint than solar per kWh of electricity produced over their respective life cycles.
