The 2018 Emissions Gap Report by the United Nations predicts that global warming emissions will rise by 10% between 2017 and 2030. In order to prevent the devastating 2 degree rise in global temperatures emissions need to drop by 25% instead.
According to a recent study published in Nature Sustainability, it takes 17 MJ of electricity to mine one dollar worth of Bitcoin. Compare that to the 5 MJ of energy are required to physically mine one dollar worth of gold.
